Manufacturing Apprenticeships the key to success
At UK-NSI, we’re proud of our heritage as a company that not only manufactures high-quality products but also helps shape the engineers of tomorrow. Over ten years ago, we recognised a significant challenge, both locally and nationally in recruiting skilled engineers. Instead of waiting for a solution, we built one.
Investing in the Future: Over a Decade of Developing Engineering Talent at UK-NSI
Our Apprenticeship Scheme, established more than a decade ago, was born out of necessity. The engineering skills shortage in the UK and particularly in our region was impacting the ability of manufacturers to innovate and grow. In response, we launched a dedicated programme to develop local talent and invest in the next generation of engineers.
Building Strong Foundations
Our approach was simple yet effective targeting enthusiastic and capable local school leavers, offering them the opportunity to begin their engineering journey through a structured and supportive pathway.
Their first year of apprenticeship is spent at MGTS (Midland Group Training Services), where apprentices are equipped with core skills and work towards achieving their NVQ qualifications.
From there, they continue their training on-site at UK-NSI, applying their knowledge in a real-world environment and progressing toward a 4 year Manufacturing Engineering programme, with qualifications up to HNC and degree level.

Recognising Excellence
Over the years, we’ve seen our apprentices thrive both personally and professionally. We are especially proud of those who have gone on to achieve accolades such as Apprentice of the Year (twice awarded to UK-NSI apprentices), and Most Improved Apprentice, recognising the growth, determination and potential within our team.
These achievements are a testament not only to the hard work of the individuals involved but also to the supportive framework provided by our programme and our training partner, MGTS.
Expanding Opportunities: The Mature Apprentice Pathway
Not content with only developing early career talent, we expanded our scheme to create a Mature Apprentice Programme, allowing current employees to retrain as engineers. This initiative provides practical, hands-on learning onsite at UK-NSI, supported by NVQ Level 3 training through MGTS.
This pathway has been extremely successful, providing career changing opportunities for those who may have missed out on traditional training routes earlier in life, while also strengthening our in-house capabilities with experienced, committed team members.
Looking Ahead
At UK-NSI, we believe that sustainable growth is only possible when we invest in people. Our Apprenticeship and Mature Apprentice Programmes continue to be a cornerstone of our workforce development strategy, helping us close the skills gap and build a stronger, more resilient future.
